John Vickberg's Last Letter

This is the last letter Alfred Vickberg received from his brother John before he disappeared.

April 21, 1924
Seattle, Wash.

Dear Alfred,

Doubtless you may be interested in getting a word from me, as if I am not mistaken it's quite some time since last I wrote, tho to be sure there isn't much of interest to write about even at this time.

As you already know I left the North last spring for Montana, as there was absolutely nothing to do out there. A person couldn't make any money, and what's more couldn't collect any a person had out, so I closed out and straightened up, as far as possible, and, as stated before went to Montana. Was there only a short time, and went to Casper, Wyoming, worked there till last fall, for the Shell Oil Co. and when the work closed down there, I went with them to Berkeley, Calif. I am now here on my way to Alaska for the same outfit. They are sending in a geological survey party to look over the possibilities in Northern Alaska. We are leaving in a day or two, and will, if all goes well, be back this fall, but there is a chance that we may be tied up there for the winter.

Will, as soon as I get back, come out your way for a visit as I have to take a trip up north to Peace River in any event, to both collect money, and pay debts. However I am mostly interested in the outcome of the oil development both there and also at "Warrowright" where I also have some leases. I'm getting tired of working for a living, at least, it wouldn't make me sore if some of my bets began to pay.

Give my regards to the folks in general. Hope they are all well and tho I should very much like to come out for a visit at this time it simply can't be done. I have a good job with this outfit, and in case I have to continue working for a living I've got to make this trip before I can get a chance for a holiday.

Regards and best wishes.

John
