The Origin of the Busness Name

The Busness name is an example of a Norwegian farm name. Torgrim Halvorsen Busness, Augusta Busness Casterton's grandfather, was born in Tinn, Telemark, Norway, and lived on a farm called Busness.

As in other Scandinavian countries, the patronymic or father's name was used in Norway, in this case, Torgrim Halversen (Torgrim, Halver's son). The farm name was then added, to make Torgrim Halversen Busness, (Torgrim, Halver's son, who lives on the Busness farm).

The farm name was not really a surname in Norway, but was a way to identify people by the place where they lived. When Norwegians emigrated to America, they often kept the farm name as a surname.
